Learn to speak Dutch - Lesson 10
10.1 Progressive Form - Progressieve vorm:
Dutch does not have an equivalent of the English Progressive Form. Constructions like `We are talking', `They were playing', etc. are usually translated with Dutch constructions in the Present Indefinite Tense: `We praten', `Ze speelden', etc. If it is essential to point out that a certain action is or was taking place at a specific time, the continuity of the action can be expressed in the following ways:
i. By means of one of the four verbs: liggen, zitten, staan or lopen, always followed by `te' ,eg.:
We zitten te praten; Ze liepen te spelen, etc.
ii. By means of the construction `aan het' followed by the verb in the infinitive form, eg.:
We zijn aan het praten; Ze waren aan het spelen, etc.
Schrijfoefening 1.
Herschrijf (rewrite) de volgende zinnen op twee verschillende manieren (ways) in de progressieve (progressive) vorm, where possible:
1. De man rookt een sigaret.
2. Wij praatten over de vakantie.
3. De mannen drinken een lekker kopje koffie.
4. De student las een moeilijk boek.
5. Vader en Moeder denken over hun problemen.
6. De jongens vechten over een paar gulden.
7. Wij schreven een lange brief aan onze familie.
8. De leraar legt een moeilijke constructie (construction) uit.
9. De zanger (singer) zingt (to sing) een prachtig lied (song).
10. Gisteravond (last night) keek ik naar een mooi programma (program) op de televisie (television).
11. Er skiden veel mensen. (skien - to ski)
12. Toen Moeder ons riep zwommen we nog.
13. Waar werken jullie?|
14. Overal in de wereld vechten mensen.
15. Zij studeert al de hele dag.
Schrijfoefening 2.
Vertaal in het Nederlands in de progressieve vorm:
1. We are talking.
2. He is studying.
3. Why are you crying? (to cry - huilen)
4. I am not crying.
5. They drank coffee all evening. (all - de hele)
6. But we didn't talk nonsense. (nonsense - onzin)
7. He is sleeping instead of listening to the teacher. (instead of - in plaats van)
8. I am reading a new book by that author.
9. Are your parents also reading?
10. No, they are not reading.

I lived for over 20 years in the Netherlands. People did generally just split the bill naturally without much jockeying around as to who would pay. One person would just put his guilders (or euros now) on the table and the rest would naturally follow.
Certainly, from my experience most Dutch people , and so too my friends, were pretty hard-nosed and direct, and although happy to pay for their own meals did not naturally volunteer to pay for someone else's consumption. Wallets were closely guarded. In fact, it might even have been permanent loss of face for yourself if you did pay for the entire table, as quite unlikely you would get reciprocity at a later date. I recall when we first moved to Den Haag in inviting the entire street round for a party and never got one invitation back in the entire 20 years. Perhaps our food and drink were not up to it ?
