Here are some more photos that have been passed to Michael Standaert, who is reporting from China on the coronavirus outbreak for the Guardian, showing nurses having to make their own surgical masks from spare cloth because of a lack of supplies.

Doctors in Wuhan forced to improvise protective gear
These pictures from one of the hospitals in Wuhan, the city at the centre of the outbreak, show medical workers resorting to wearing the plastic covers originally used to pack medical supplies because of a shortage of protective gear.
They have been provided to the Guardian by a doctor working at Wuhan union hospital.
The publication of the images come amid a row over emergency medical supplies not getting to the correct places.
Michael Standaert, who is reporting for the Guardian from China, earlier reported how the Red Cross Society of Hubei has come under fire from Chinese netizens who say the charity is sending high-quality medical grade N95 filtration masks to hospitals that are not at the centre of the outbreak nor fever clinics in the greatest need of masks.
The Red Cross subsequently released a statement saying their announcement was mislabelled and it should have said they were KN95 masks, not N95 masks, which is why those other hospitals got them and not the frontline treatment hospitals.
But a chief executive of a company that makes high-quality face masks in China cast doubt on the claim. “To me that sounds like quite the excuse,” he said.
“N95 and KN95 uses exactly the same standards. N95 is the CDC NIOSH standard, that’s the US standard. The Chinese standard – the guobiao standard – is called the KN95. In Europe, it is FFP2, it is 94% [filtration] but it is the same standard. All of those standards require the masks to be able to filter out a rate of 95% of particles at peak breath rate.”

Wat wel heel triest is: als je een chinese partner hebt, mag die van china niet mee met een evacuatievliegtuig. Zelfs niet als dat vliegtuig je wel mee wil nemen. Het is dus kiezen of delen voor westerlingen met een chinese partner: zelf ook blijven of je partner daar achterlaten.
(maar dan wél vragen of dat evacuatievliegtuig hulpgoederen mee wil nemen. Dat vind ik wel een beetje dubbel).

Uiteraard staat urgent tussen aanhalingstekens. 
"Voor 'urgent' wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar het nieuwe coronavirus trekt de Europese Unie 10 miljoen euro uit. Doel is meer te weten te komen over het virus zodat beter kan worden bepaald wat de beste voorzorgsmaatregelen zijn. Ook moet eruit blijken hoe om te gaan met besmette mensen. Het virus is inmiddels in een handvol lidstaten opgedoken."

In de markt wordt rekening gehouden met een daling van de vraag naar olie in China met 250.000 vaten per dag als gevolg van het virus. "

Dit was trouwens niet zomaar een Chinees, maar Chen Qiushi een human rights lawyer, bekend van de protesten in HongKong, die ook nog een tijdje vermist is geweest.impala schreef: ↑31-01-2020 08:43Deze man doet verslag uit Wuhan en maakte de 29e zelf een risicovol rondje ziekenhuizen. Conclusie: het wordt er rustiger, de rijen korter. Niet omdat het beter gaat, maar omdat mensen het ziekenhuis niet kunnen bereiken. Bovendien doen ze geen moeite meer want je wordt er toch niet geholpen: geen bedden, geen testkits.
De gangen zitten vol met mensen die aan het zuurstof zitten. Mensen zitten buiten op de stoep aan het infuus, hij zag mensen in hun eigen auto aan het infuus hangen.
Hij maakte ook video opnames, je ziet een dode man op de gang in zijn stoel zitten/hangen. Een familielid? dat bij hem is zegt : er is geen auto om zijn lichaam op te halen
Taxichauffeurs hebben hem verteld dat zij half december al wisten dat er een gevaarlijk virus rondging en dat de markt een bron van besmetting was.
Hij is bij het ziekenhuis in aanbouw geweest. Mensen werken er in shifts van 24 uur achtereen en vallen er bijna bij neer. Het ziekenhuis wordt zo gebouwd dat er geen lucht en rioolwater etc naar buiten komt.
De videomaker/verslaggever heeft nu zelf ook klachten. Hij is doodsbang geworden van wat hij gezien heeft en zegt : ik hoop dat mijn klachten gewoon door stress komen.

Japanese social media users said the travelers, who arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday, were putting the country at risk. Some called them terrorists.
“We tried to persuade the two returnees from Wuhan for many hours” to be tested, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in Parliament on Thursday, when asked about the government’s treatment of repatriated citizens. “But there is no legally binding force, and that’s a great regret.” Mr. Abe said.
