Practise a bit, I would say.

So I went to Scotland last summer. I like to think my English is pretty decent, but man - I didn't understand a word of what they were saying when making the hostel reservation (in my defense: there was a lot of background noise). I even almost asked them if they could please speak English.
If at first you don’t succeed, call it version 1.0

I can imagine that, Daf. Perhaps you could have just turned to ceefax page 888?

Eeeeh... what does that mean? Ceefax is teletekst and that particular page will give you the subtitles.

And what about the Aussie slang!!!

Next month we are moving to Australia and I have heard stories about the slang!!!!!

Aussie slang

Ahhh weer wat geleerd vandaag!

I am not speaking Aussie slang at all... do not know any Aussies but how nice you will be going there Sarah! Moving as in permanently living there?

I once met an Aussie girl who was talking about her 'thongs', so I thought it to be about her underwear, whereas she meant her flip flops

What I found difficult was that some English speaking persons don't say "half past" anymore, but only half when they're telling you the time. So when they were saying half three, I was confused. Do they mean half past three or half past two? (they did mean half past three)

It took me a while to figure that out.:D

Sarah2life, I lived in Oz for 7 months and the slang is sometimes difficult, but people are always kind enough to explain what they're saying. And you will learn it quickly.

You're right! And I refused to call them tounges as well, because it was just too weird for me.

When I first moved here, I (innocently) talked about my panties. Until it suddenly struck me that every time I used that word, my roommates would start giggling.

So. Lesson learned. Tights it is.

Well, you guys wrote a lot here. Nice, that's exactly what I wanted to cause with this topic !

I just came back from that public garden: it rained a bit, but it was cosy though. But even though I only drank Ice tea, I've got a big headache now! So that's the bad part of the day.

My head is full with thoughts about everything I have to arrange before my departure.

I think I'm going to pack up some stuff already.

I love the expression 'How about them apples'. I can't realy think of a good Dutch translation for it.

As for soul/sole thats what I ment by being sloppy. I know that soul is ziel but in my sloppyness and not writing English for 15 years those are the kind of mistakes I make. I love to keep writing here for practice

Kym, how was your date? And when are you leaving?
Alle reacties Link kopieren
I'm wondering what they mean with 'How about them apples'. Never heard of it.

My date was ok. But ey, I think I haven't got space for those kind of stuff right now. So I kept the contact very decent and cycled home satisfied.

I'm leaving in the first week of july Lunax. So that's very soon.Tomorrow I will consider the established date of departure.

And then I have to plan a date for my saying-goodbye-party (what the hell is the word for it?)

How about them apples means something like 'als je ergens blij verrast door bent en er een beetje om moet grinniken. bijvoorbeeld je ziet ineens twee mensen iets doen wat totaal uit karakter is maar ontzettend leuk. Dan kan je die uitdrukking gebruiken'

I think

And your departure is just four weeks away? Wow, that's soon. I can imagine you don't feel like dating

Your saying-goodbye-party sounds fine to me by the way. I guess you could use 'farewell party' but that souds so definate.

That's what I thought...

I like going-away-party much better
Alle reacties Link kopieren
Exactly, so from now on we're going to call it a goingawayparty

Pff, it's late already. And I don't want to go to sleep yet. I'm listening to a beautiful cd of Adele. Do you know it? Can't get enough of it!

Did you have a nice and sunny day as well indeed? And do you have to work again tomorrow?

Lucky I've got another day off tomorrow. Yeah!
Alle reacties Link kopieren
Lucky you indeed!

I had a very nice and sunny afternoon at the beach today. I love summer and the feeling it brings. So yes, I had a perfect day

It's way to late again. Like every evening here. I am an evening person. Which I regret every morning when my alarm rings

I am watching a compilation of Pinkpop right now, while being on the forum. But I guess it realy is time to shut down the computer. Cause some of us do have to work tomorrow

Enjoy your day tomorrow!
Alle reacties Link kopieren
You're totally right Lunax: it's so hard being a evening-person...

Smart idea to shut off the computer. I think I'm going to do that as well. Read a bit in a book and hopefully sleep like an angel.

Good luck with working tomorrow!

Goodmorning girls!

Had not heard about the expression with apples too, but it sounds funny Think it is a British saying?

And about the going away party, I would call it a 'leaving do'. But if right, I would have probably spelled it wrongly :( But going away party explains it too...

Well off to work now! Kym you are so lucky to have a free day today.

I'm not sure if it is a British expression.

My ride will be here any minute so just a short note to whish you all a nice day

How about them apples: usually said when you're gloating. Someone tries to impress you, you can do much better, you show it to the person while saying: how do you like them apples?

Translated into Dutch it means something along the lines of: Wat dacht je me daarvan?, of Had je niet gedacht hè?
Alle reacties Link kopieren
And it seems to be a very American way of putting it, I haven't heard a European use it yet

But a friend from Miami used to make me laugh by saying it all the time, especially when drunk.

"Just bought me another beer, how about them apples?"
